Union Gospel Mission Valentine Dinner

Fort Worth, Texas - The Union Gospel Mission has asked the Detachment to participate in the Battered Women's Valentine Dinner again this year. For those who wish to help out and participate please wear your red blazers if escorting the ladies otherwise wear your red league shirt if serving meals. The time and place will be communicated at a later date.

Max Tague Memorial "Toys for Tots" Bike Run

Alvarado, Texas - Another successful "Toys for Tots" bike run ended Sunday afternoon at VFW Post 9299 in Alvarado, Texas. Hundreds of riders from motorcycle clubs all over the metroplex made their trip down I35 South ending at the VFW to donate over 770 toys and $1300 cash to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. The event was sponsored by the Rebel Riders Motorcycle Club, VFW Post 9299, and the Marine Corps League Longhorn Detachment.

New 2011 Officers Elected

Crowley, Texas - The Longhorn Detachment has elected the following officers for year 2011.

Commandant - Edgar Ermis
Sr Vice Commandant - David Nelson
Jr Vice Commandant - Jon McCracken
Judge Advocate - Les Stevenson

Congratulations to the new officers and thanks to all who participated in the election process. The officers will be sworn in at the January 4, 2011 membership meeting.

2010 Marine Corps League Birthday Ball

Alvarado, Texas - The Longhorn Detachment held their Marine Corps Birthday Ball on November 6, 2010 at the VFW Post in Alvarado, Texas. Under the leadership of MGySgt Jon McCracken, the Leonard Middle School Jr ROTC Cadets provided the Color Guard. The guest of honor was Col Forest L Lucy, USMC (Ret) and his wife Shirlene. The oldest Marine present was Fred Bailey and the youngest was Sgt and Detachment Commandant elect Edgar Ermis.

The festivities were catered by Cousins Bar-b-que who served the guests delicious brisket, chicken, beans, potato salad, slaw with peach and cherry cobblers.

When it was all finished the Detachment members and their guests had an memorable evening celebrating the birth of their beloved Corps.

2nd Annual Longhorn Detachment Golf Tournament

Burleson, Texas - The Longhorn Detachment hosted its 2nd annual golf tournament at Hidden Creek Golf Course in what turned out to be a perfect day for golf. Lunch was served at noon, then golf teams from all over the metroplex hit the course competing for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies as well as medals for closest to the hole and longest drive. Team members also entered into a raffle where they won prizes.

The Longhorn Detachment thanks all the teams and company sponsors that supported the tournament. Tournament proceeds benefitted local non-profit organizations Crowley House of Hope, Burleson Harvest House, the Wounded Warriors program, and the Longhorn Detachment.

Fort Worth, Texas - In commemoration of September 11, 2001, Leonard Middle School Jr ROTC Cadets, under the leadership of MGySgt Jon McCracken, conducted a flag raising ceremony in front of the school. The Flag that was raised has been flown over the Pentagon and is only flown over the school for this special occasion. Distinguished guests included US Representative Kay Grainger, Marty Leonard, daughter of Marvin Leonard the schools namesake, and Lt Col James Davidson, who just recently returned from Afghanistan. Fort Worth and Benbrook Police and Fire Departments were in attendance as well as the Fort Worth Police helicopter. Students and adults respectfully watched as members of the Longhorn Detachment ceremoniously raised the Flag.

2010 Crowley Celebrate Freedom Day Celebration

Crowley, Texas - The Crowley Freedom Day Celebration was a big success! The Longhorn Detachment participated in the parade, the POW/MIA ceremony, and then sold close to 1,200 pints of Blue Bell® ice cream at the park.
