Crowley resident Commandant Bill Carver and the Longhorn Detachment No. 1069 of the Marine Corps League want to ensure the history of the Marine Corps is never forgotten.

The organization does so through hosting local community service projects and helping those in need.

"Helping people is the most rewarding part about being in this detachment," Carver, a former marine, said. "We want to help keep the tradition of the MCL alive and keep all of the patriotic events going because we don't want them to be lost."

The local detachment is based off the same founding principals the MCL started with in 1937. The MCL was founded by Major General Commandant John A. Lejeune in 1923 and chartered by an Act of Congress 14 years later.

Across the country, more than 60,000 male and female honorably discharged, retired, active duty and reserve Marines serve hospitalized veterans, awards scholarships, participate in patriotic functions and community service and promote camaraderie among their membership.

Carver said the most rewarding service opportunity he's experienced with the MCL happened when members responded to a call from a woman who was concerned for her neighbor, a World War II veteran in his early 90s.

"She told me he had a flag that he tried to put up every morning on a little stick that he tied to a rickety pole," Carver said. "So we went and bought and mounted a new flag pole for him and gave him a new flag. It was something that was of very little cost and labor-wise it was no big deal, but you would have thought we just handed him a million dollars."

The detachment also does volunteer work for Toys for Tots, a domestic violence shelter in Tarrant County, Crowley House of Hope and makes monthly visits to veterans in local nursing homes.

Carver said that the league is able to continue its mission through donations and fundraising alone.

"The main thing is that we want to help educate people about who we are," he said. "If we can get the word out about the MCL and what it is that we do then there would be no way people won't want to help. We aim to help Marines and their families, but we also care about helping the community."

Raising awareness about the league is a primary goal and fundraising is one of many tools the MCL plans to use to accomplish that, Carver said.

"Most people want to help the service people and they just don't know how," he said. "We want to do so much more for our fellow service people and the community. The will is there, but the funds aren't always there. If people want to help the Marines and other service people, then they can help us so that we can help them."

Proceeds from a golf tournament Oct. 9 at Southern Oaks Golf Course will go to supporting the detachment and the MCL's goals. It is the detachment's largest annual fundraiser.
